According to the most recent figures, TalkTalk is one of the four biggest ISPs in the UK, with over 4 million customers. TalkTalk is determined to be the cheapest broadband provider on the market without compromising its speed. And the speed tests have shown the same, as they are keeping pace with their rivals, even expensive ones.
However, 2020 was not a great year so far for TalkTalk as one of the surveys showed them at the bottom of the ranking in nearly every category. Most noticeable was its customer service score, which is also its weak point for many years. But despite that, TalkTalk is still providing cheap broadband packages it promises and became popular for.
What we like
- Cheap prices as compared to other providers
- Truly unlimited usage
- 30-days great connection guarantee (for fibre connections only)
- A fixed price
- Great value for money
What we don’t like
- Customer support is non-UK based
- Poor customer support reputation
Is TalkTalk broadband any good? In this article, we have taken an in-depth look at everything you want to know.
Is TalkTalk Broadband Any Good
TalkTalk is currently offering broadband in three different speeds: Unlimited Broadband with a basic speed of 11MB (ADSL), Unlimited Faster Fibre with a speed of 38MB and Unlimited Superfast Fibre has a speed of 67M.
These speeds are almost the same as the other internet providers in the industry such as Sky, Plusnet, EE and BT. However, you can not compare ANY broadband in the UK with Virgin Media in terms of speed.
|Fibre optic||38Mb / 67Mb||36Mb / 50Mb / 67Mb||36Mb / 66Mb||36Mb / 59Mb||54Mb / 108Mb / 213Mb / 362Mb / 516Mb|
Average download speed of TalkTalk (min & max) vs Other provider’s average download speed (min & max)
The speed shown in this table is an average speed and the speed you will get, might not be the same. However, the speed is usually consistent and stable with fibre broadband, but in ADSL, there will be variations. If you are wondering how you will experience the actual speed without using, then there is good news for you. TalkTalk provides you with a speed estimate for your particular area before installation so you can make your decision easier.
TalkTalk Broadband Packages
- Unlimited Broadband (ADSL)
TalkTalk’s basic broadband package which uses a copper ADSL phone line. It provides you with a speed of 11Mbps. But the speed of broadband will heavily depend upon the distance between your house and the phone exchange. The problem with ADSL-based broadband is that its speed fluctuates too much and that’s why most of the people avoid it.
However, 50% of TalkTalk customers who were using this speed said that they experience a speed about 11Mbps during peak times. Although this deal is fair for the basic internet activities, TalkTalk is not interested in attracting customers towards this package as the price of 11Mbps package and 36Mbps is pretty much the same.
- Unlimited faster Fibre
The average download speed of this bundle is 38Mbps, which is three times the speed of the aforementioned package. Most households prefer this package as it is very economical without compromising the speed. You can easily stream Netflix, play games, use social media and even download as much as you want.
- Unlimited Superfast Fibre
With an average speed of 67Mbps, Unlimited Superfast Fibre is the fastest broadband TalkTalk provides. This package along with a smart Wi-Fi Hub makes the internet go bonkers. This package is ideal for professional gamers, for those who love to download stuff and for big households with more than four internet using members.
TalkTalk lies in the category of a budget broadband provider which offers some of the lowest-priced broadband packages in the UK. The good thing about TalkTalk pricing is that you won’t face a price hike mid-contract as the company freeze prices until the contract is over. However, it should be noted that freezing of prices is only limited to a broadband element of your bill and TalkTalk has the right to increase prices of TV and Phone.
While offering the cheap contracts, TalkTalk is determined to provide unlimited broadband, which they claim that it never slows down even at peak times. Let’s take a look at the prices of three packages available widely.
|Package||Download Speed||Contract Length||Upfront Cost||Monthly price|
|TalkTalk||Fast Broadband||11Mbps||18 months||None||£22.95|
|TalkTalk||Faster Fibre||38Mbps||18 months||None||£23.50|
|TalkTalk||Superfast Fibre||67Mbps||18 months||None||£26|
The most considerable point this table shows is like all the other internet providers, TalkTalk is not pretty much into pushing their ADSL (copper broadband) to customers. That’s why it is almost the same price as the Fast Fibre package with the speed of 38Mbps. So going for ADSL would not be a very wise decision when you can get three times as much speed at the same price.
‘TalkTalk Super Router’ is a device you get with your TalkTalk broadband connection. You will get either D-Link 3782 or an HG633.
It is surely not the best technology out there but has all the features one would need, like Wi-Fi ac, multiple ethernet ports and the latest security. But still, there are many providers with better devices, for example, BT smart Hub and Sky Q Hub, which offers smart Wi-Fi and ultrafast speeds.
That being said, the super router is just fine and works decently. It is easy to use and reliable as well.
TalkTalk is not one of the best Broadbands in terms of customer service, leading with the highest number of broadband complaints, shown by Ofcom’s figure for four consecutive quarters till Q2 2018.
Although they are getting better ratings now and have become the third provider with most complaints, it has much to do with Vodafone’s entry into the broadband complaints and nothing much improved by TalkTalk.
That said, TalkTalk has been improving slowly and steadily as the customers can now contact service agents through the MyTalkTalk app via text message, so they don’t have to wait for agents to be free to take a call.
The focal point of TalkTalk broadband is the price. It is one of the cheapest broadband in the industry, especially fibre, with all the amazing features. There is no cloud storage available like BT, not the speed of a Virgin Media – but since it is fairly priced, you can go for it.
