Is Plusnet Broadband Any Good?

Plusnet is surely not on a par with the likes of Sky or Virgin Media, but it certainly is doing better than some experts expected them to do, especially when it comes to fibre speeds. But the important thing you should be aware of is that Plusnet has different pricing depending on the area you want broadband in – if you live in an area which is classed as ‘non-low cost’ you will have to pay extra quids than others.

Is Plusnet Broadband Any Good

You get three choices of speed with Plusnet. The basic package offers an average speed of 10Mbps with truly unlimited. This might just be enough for you if you are looking for light internet usage such as sending emails, surfing the internet and using social media. Besides that, you get almost the same speed from other internet providers when it comes to a basic package. It will most certainly fulfil the needs of a household of one to three members.

Talking about Plusnet’s Unlimited Fibre services, it offers an average speed of 36Mbps, while the Unlimited Fibre Extra lets you surf the internet at 66Mbps. If you are a big family (more than 3 members), you are going to need at least 36Mbps speed connection to keep the online activities smooth. If you are wondering what speed you can get from other ISPs then let me tell you there isn’t any big difference.

The top speed Plusnet provides is 66Mbps which is exactly the same which other providers offer except Virgin Media. This package is recommended for the household with a number of internet users and high usage or gaming purpose.

With all that being said, it is worth remembering that the average speed mentioned by the company will not be what you will be getting actually. The faster speed or slowdowns depend on many factors and one of them is the area you are living in.

Plusnet might not be the cheapest broadband you will get on the market but it does offer some very attractive packages for those who are tight on budget. All in all, you get pretty decent services from Plusnet while prices are not so different than its rivals.

There is a unique offer from Plusnet as well which needs to be mentioned is that they are offering ‘no contract’ packages. If you are at a place where you are not going to be for 24 months (as other providers cap the contract), then you can cash out this offer. But keep in mind that you will be paying more for this so we recommend using your judgment.

Other than that, Plusnet also offers cashback or shopping vouchers occasionally to attract new customers. So keep an eye on that as well. Though Plusnet keeps their prices as low as possible, they have to compete in a fair market, right? So there are not any big hikes you will see when we compare the Plusnet packages’ price to other providers. Here, take a look:

Plusnet offers two types of routers for different broadband packages. Plusnet’s ADSL users will get a Plusnet Hub Zero router. It is a pretty basic model router which supports 802.11n wi-fi only, meaning that you might not get the ideal speeds on new devices. However, there is no need to be disappointed as the Plusnet allows you to use third-party routers as well so if you already have a high-end router at your disposal, you are good to go.

The second type of router is for those who sign up for Plusnet’s fibre connection. It is named ‘Plusnet Hub On’. It offers dual-band WIFI for both 802.11n and 802.11ac. Which means it is very fast in connecting devices which support the 5Ghz 802.11ac WIFI standard.

Customer Service

Although Plusnet used to have decent customer service in the past, it was heavily damaged in 2018-19 due to some issues.

End of 2018 was the star of Plusnet’s downfall as it got named as the ‘Worst performer’ by far in Q4 2018 in terms of complaints, with 43 per 100,000, while the runner-up Vodafone had only 25. The industry’s average complaints per 100,000 customers in Q4 2019 was 12 and Plusnet had a number of 20, which is pretty high and put them as the second-worst behind Vodafone.

These customer service problems of Plusnet really overshadow a pretty decent record according to Ofgem’s report (2019) about customer satisfaction.

Our Verdict

Despite having some issues with their customer service department, Plusnet still offers some of the cheapest broadband packages around. Ofcom’s speed report also revealed that they are pretty close to providing the speed they promise in at least 50% of the cases.

The recent customer service record and the billing system meltdown in 2018 let them down badly but the signs show the recovery progress. If they continue to improve their complaint figures, they will be one of the cheapest and high-speed internet providers.
