How Good Is Vodafone Broadband?

How Good Is Vodafone Broadband

We all know that any kind of service can not be judged based on the number of their users. So how does it measure up? Are they as good as their mobile services? So, if you are looking for the answer to your question of “how good is Vodafone broadband” Let me break it down for you!

What we like

  • A great router along with the app allowing easy to control home network
  • No upfront cost or any hidden charges
  • Fast enough especially for families
  • Fair fibre optics prices with great packages
  • Average download speed of 35MB and 63MB
  • Completely unlimited downloads without any usage caps
  • No traffic management so no occasional slowdowns

What we don’t like

  • There are much better providers in the market in terms of speed
  • TV bundles are not available
  • Customer service is not up there as of now

Vodafone is not yet a competitor of Virgin Media for speed and it can’t beat Sky for TV too as it does not even offer any kind of TV service. But that does not matter if you are looking for a cheap and high-quality internet (not many provide both) for your home. It offers a satisfying service at cheap rates as compared to its rivals. Is Vodafone broadband any good? Yes, and I do recommend it.

Vodafone Broadband Speeds

Vodafone broadband offers three speeds varying with the package you sign up for: basic ADSL, 35MB (fibre optic) and 63MB (fibre optic). This is almost the same as what you can get from most of the providers including TalkTalk, EE, Plusnet and Sky.

The speed of Vodafone broadband is great for common use unless you compare it with Virgin Media, which has a package with an average speed of whopping 362MB. However, these numbers are only average estimations and the actual speed you will get with Vodafone can vary depending on the area you are living in.

Here is what Vodafone offer:

PackageAverage speedContract lengthUpfront price    Monthly price
Superfast 135Mb average24 monthsNone£23
Superfast 263Mb average24 monthsNone£25
Gigafast 100100Mb average24 monthsNone£25
Gigafast 200200Mb average24 monthsNone£28
Gigafast 500500Mb average24 monthsNone£33
Gigafast 900900Mb average24 monthsNone£43

Surprisingly, Vodafone is offering superfast and ultrafast broadband speeds (superfast 2 and gigawatt 100) at the same rate. But do not get carried away as the Vodafone Gigafast services are currently available in only 12 cities. Otherwise, you would see a clear step-up in price with the speed tiers. But still, who would not want to jump from 100MB to 200MB by throwing away an extra 2 or 3 quids per month?

Router

Tech-wise, the router you get with Vodafone broadband connection is pretty decent. 802.11ac standard router is capable of sending the highest possible speed over wi-fi.

I work on both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz band. This is an impressive feature as the 2.4Ghz band is mostly used by home broadbands routers to send and receive wi-fi signals. But the problem with 2.4Ghz is that it is getting crowded at a problematic level, meaning you might face slow speeds due to the other nearby routers in your area. That is where the 5Ghz band comes in to save a day.

There is also a unique feature that Vodafone fibre router also offers called “beamforming technology”. The basic idea of this technology is to push the router to make an extra effort to carry the signals to a specific device. Let’s say your room is on the other end of where the router is placed, and you want to use your mobile phone but the signals are weak. That’s when beamforming technology comes into play and will focus the signals solely to your desired device. Amazing.

Overall, Vodafone’s router, unlike the Virgin Hub, Sky Q Hub and others, is a very impressive bit of a device.

Installation

The installation process of Vodafone broadband takes up to two weeks tops. There are two ways it works, depending on whether you already have a phone line or not.

If you already have an active phone line at your home, your time will be saved and the process will be pretty simpler. You will receive a Vodafone router with the given instructions of how and when to plug it in. but if you don’t have a phone line installed already, an engineer will get in touch with you to discuss the best possible way to get the line into your house. It may take some time.

Customer Service

When it comes to customer service, the story is not quite so positive. Ofcom’s Comparing Service Quality 2020 report clearly shows the problem in Vodafone’s customer service department. The report shows that Vodafone registered 115 complaints per 100,000 customers during 2019 which is very high in the industry with an average of 52.

44.8% of Vodafone customers said they were satisfied here, less than 15% stated they were very satisfied. Again, one of the lowest scores in the industry. Ofcom’s service quality comparison missed out Vodafone, probably because there is not enough data out there to be gathered and was nothing to be compared with the previous year.

Our verdict

If you ask me, I will say it is almost worth getting Vodafone broadband for the router alone. With its high-end technology and smart features, it does stand out compared to many routers you get with broadband in a similar price range.

But other than the router, Vodafone is great for families especially if you have got kids who are old enough to be addicted to the internet. You get fast fibre speeds at a cheap price and will work just fine if you have two to four internet users in your home.

It falls short when it comes to TV services. A lot of providers like Sky, Virgin Media, BT, TalkTalk and more, offer broadband and TV together. But if you are looking just for broadband, it is a good one.

Hopefully, this short guide has explained your question of how good is Vodafone broadband.
