Are 0800 Numbers Free on Mobile Phones?

Are 0800 Numbers Free on Mobile Phones

Are 0800 numbers free on mobile phones? For the longest time in the UK, when people would call 0800 numbers from their cell phones, they would heavily be charged for it. But ever since July 2015, the costs have changed.

However, before we get into the gist of it, you need to know what 0800 numbers are. 0800 numbers are UK non-geographic telephone numbers that have been “free to call” from UK-based mobile and landline phones since 1st July 2015.

Before July 2015, calling a UK 0800 number was only free from landline telephones. Cell phone guests were charged for the 0800 calls by their supplier. This started allegations of unjustifiable practice and brought up issues regarding whether a 0800 number could be called a true “freephone” number.

After extensive detailed research on costs of calls on non-geographic numbers, Ofcom, at last, recognized the unfairness of charging mobile calls to 0800 numbers, kicking off the launch of its “UK Calling Initiative” in July 2015. From that point onwards, 0800 numbers are free to call and this action has brought transparency into the market. Mobile phone users are now being able to ring 0800 numbers without being charged extra on top of their existing monthly plans.

For cell phone clients, one of the best parts of the new rules presented by Ofcom in July 2015 was realizing that calling a 0800 number from a cell phone was now free. There had been a ton of disarray about this before the new rules were presented. From first July 2015, the expense of calling administration numbers was divided into two clear parts:

An access charge: This part of the call charge goes to your telephone company, charged a pence every minute. They will let you know how much the access charge will be for calls to service numbers. It will be stated on bills and when you take out a contract.

A service charge: This is the rest of the call charge. The company you are calling chooses this and will let you know what the amount it is.

This has motivated numerous organizations and companies to move from 08 numbers to less expensive 03 numbers. Ofcom said that UK customers spent a total of £900m every year on 250 million calls to 084, 087, 09, or 118 helplines. Calls to 03 numbers cost close to calls to geographic 01 and 02 numbers.

Will Business Phone or Payphone be charged?

A frequently asked question in regards to this new rule is whether the call will be free of cost if made through a business phone or a payphone. These new rules apply to residential landlines and consumer mobile phones. If you are calling from a business phone, the network will have the full right to decide how much they will cost for it. Hence, it is wise to call your supplier and know beforehand. When it comes to payphones, these calls are not charged on payphones. But that is because calling service numbers from payphones is not allowed.

How Will My Telephone Company Convey the Charges?

Now that we have discussed the basics, you might be wondering how your phone service provider will communicate the access charge. Telephone companies are responsible for distributing access charges in a manner that is obvious and easily available to clients. That means it will be available on your telephone organization’s site, in its published price records, on bills, and in any promotional and special material which refers to call pricing. When a new client takes out a contract, the telephone organization they are joining with must inform them about the access charges.

Telephone organizations are likewise responsible for informing customers whether charges for calls to service numbers are included within packages or inclusive calls.

Do Charges Change with Telephone or Mobile Companies?

Every telephone or mobile service provider has the right to set their access charges. These charges are public knowledge and are told to every client. When choosing a mobile service company, you can compare the prices of different telephones company and their access costs. Even though the access charges may change between suppliers, it will be the same for calls you make to the affected numbers which are in your call plan. A few network providers may decide to offer call plans which include a portion of these charges inside their inclusive call bundles.

However, when it comes to service charges, it does not matter who your telephone or mobile supplier is, the charges will remain the same. These only change if you are a business customer.

What if I Want to Buy A 0800 Number for My Business?

0800 Numbers are accessible to purchase from several sources. Be that as it may, they differ extensively in cost. Usually, you will pay a month to month bill for renting the 0800 number. Besides, you will also pay a variable amount for sending inbound calls to a landline or mobile number.

Many people claim that this news is a terrific one. This new rule means that there will be no rip-off numbers soon. However, many companies have complained that this new rule might cost them a financial hit. This new cost can burden companies and eventually affect the employees and put pressure on them.

Awareness was raised about how many people will now call 0800 numbers spontaneously or as a joke since they are now freephone numbers.

Despite all the opposition, 0800 are still free of cost in the UK. However, many people are unaware of this fact and businesses opt for service numbers that do not start from 0800 but cheaper numbers to meet their budgets.
